Yin Therapy: Yin Yoga & Anatomy Intensive

Thursday 13 June 2019  10.30am - 5.00pm

Part One: Yin Yoga Foundation
You will be taken on a journey to “the other half” of yoga to discover the profound practice of Yin Yoga and its role in Yin Therapy.  We will discuss the unique therapeutic benefits and discover why Yin Yoga is a vital complementary practice for not only yoga teachers/practitioners but for everyone, especially those suffering from chronic back pain and/or stress related illnesses.

In the Yin Yoga asana class, you will experience, that when we truly listen and respect our bodies, it becomes a profoundly holistic and therapeutic practice.

Theory
What is yin yoga?
What is yang yoga?
What are the advantages of each kind of yoga?
How do they complement each other?
What is tension and what is compression?
What is the function of our connective tissue/fascia in this practice?
Stress and back pain, and yin yoga as a “therapeutic touch”

Practice
Yin yoga class (Paul Grilley style)
Focus: back class

Part Two: Yoga Anatomy
In recent years, the concept of “one alignment for all” has come under scrutiny in the international yoga world. Practitioners and teachers alike are recognising the limitations (and potential harm) of dogmatically following this rule.

We will discuss skeletal variation and its relevance to yoga asana practise. Discover how different bone structures really are and in doing so, realise the shortfall of workshop alignment rules. When you understand the importance of respecting your own unique bone structure, you will discover your individual alignment which will liberate your yoga asana practise as well as your students’ – maximising the benefits of the practice and minimising the risk of injury.

Theory:
Skeletal variation
Function/aesthetics
Compression and tension
Analysis of a yoga pose

Practice
Skeletal variation tests and practical consequences for yang yoga asanas and assists – such as lotus, shoulder stand, pigeon, down dog, warrior, etc.

We’ll analyse the following asanas in detail:
Lotus position        - external rotation of the hip joint
Reclining hero       -  internal rotation of the hip joint
Shoulder Stand       - neck, shoulder, collarbone and shoulder blade

We'll discuss the following issues:
What restrictions does my individual bone structure impose on me?
How different is it from other people’s bone structure?
Will I or my students ever manage to get into the lotus position or achieve a “perfect” pigeon, etc?
Where are the areas of compression and tension within my individual bone structure? How do I deal with it?
How can I stretch and stimulate the tissues, when compression is constricting me?
What is the physical function of a yoga pose?

Yoga Anatomy: The Anatomy of Back Pain

Friday 14 June 2019  10.30am - 1.30pm

Lower back pain is the most prevalent of musculoskeletal conditions and its impact is pervasive. It affects hundreds of millions of people around the world. 80% of adults experience back pain at least once a year. It is the most common cause of job-related disability and a leading contributor to missed work days.

In this workshop we will examine lower back pain from a physiological and psychological perspective. Learn about fascia, the “yin” tissue, the integral role it plays in the lower back, the importance of Yoga for maintaining a mobile and pain free body and why Yin Yoga is considered to be a highly effective, therapeutic method to help relieve and cure back pain.

We introduce the Yin Therapy concept - working with back pain, disc herniations, bulged discs in a yin yoga practice etc.

Yin Therapy in Practice

Friday 14 June 2019  2.00pm - 5.00pm

Explore the unique therapeutic benefits and discover why Yin Yoga is a vital complementary practise for not only yoga teachers and practitioners of any style but for everyone, especially those suffering from chronic back pain and or stress related illnesses.

Furthermore, learn the importance of a Yin Practice (Meditation, Yin Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Yoga Nidra) creating health through the activation of the rest and digest system and happiness through connecting with the higher brain functions living life in the here and now.

We will practice:
Deep breathing meditation
Yin Yoga asana practice
Body scan
Meditation in Movement – lying, sitting, standing, walking

Yin Yoga & The Six Senses

Saturday 15 June 2019  10.30am - 12.30pm

Many of us are not only afraid of dying! Many of us are afraid of living and are stressed and overwhelmed from the constant changing state of emotions such as grief, anger, frustration, love, happiness.

Many of us detest ourselves throughout life and criticize for example, our own bodies, covering up our deep-seated fears of being criticized, ridiculed or not being good enough. A deep-seated feeling within us says "You are not enough". It appears that we simply have no idea how to live a happy life.

Instead of experiencing the miracle of life, our existence as part of nature, we distract ourselves from it and deal with life the best we can. At the end of life, most of us are full of regret.

In this workshop, we explore the art of living through the six senses with which we perceive life. We will discuss how to overcome our ignorance of the Queens and Kings (ourselves), how to deal with fear, frustration and anger and how to nourish one’s happiness through mindfulness. We introduce a powerful tool, a sound which brings us back to the here and now - to live life in the present and without regrets in the future.

Yin Yoga & Mindfulness

Sunday 16 June 2019  8.00am - 10.00am

During this workshop we explain Buddhist mindfulness and how to apply this principle in a yin yoga practice. Mindfulness is the key to find a deeper meaning in everything, e.g. your yoga practice, life, work and relationships. We learn to be open and non-resistant in the impermanence of living. We learn to be truly happy with what is.
